Pingmag has another nice posting where they take a look at the pet bottles which can be found in the many vending machines on Japanese street corners.
I especially like these ones resembling bamboo, the material traditionally used to drink these kinds of teas:

Daft Punk?
The British Ministry of Defense showed a prototype of a helmet for future F-35 (Joint Strike Fighter) pilots.
The future is now, that's the only thing I can think of when I see this. The sci-fi age has truly arrived!

not just for shipping
The humble shipping container, we all know it as the workhorse of the world economy. There is however a more interesting side to this object. Students across the country might already know it as an interesting place to live. Easy to stack, they make for some cool flexible cheap housing.
NOTCOT has an overview of some more creative uses for these containers, the Illy mobile coffee bar is one of the latest surprises:

Tokyo motor show
The tokyo motor show always features some of the most outrageous and futuristic concept cars. This year's show
is no different, featuring the mazda taiki, the yamaha tesseract and the honda puyo.
Manhole cover design
Decorative coins? Nope, Japanese manhole covers from the Okachin Manhole Cover Gallery, which is over a thousand images deep. If you're going to make your living climbing down into sewers, you may as well have something pretty to look at on the way in.

Space Money
Money and spacetravel is apparantly a tricky combination. Imagine a heavy metallic coin floating around, bumping into delicate instruments. Well, a team of scientists has now come up with a way to provide space pick-pockets with a new prize. A new currency and coins specifically designed to solve these problems, called the quid (Quasi Universal Intergalactic Denomination).
I can imagine these being HIGHLY sought after by coin collectors that now have to do with mere Earth money.

Drink' n fun!
iBar is a system for the interactive design of any bar-counter. Integrated video-projectors can project any content on the milky bar-surface. The intelligent tracking system of iBar detects all objects touching the surface. This input is used to let the projected content interact dynamically with the movements on the counter. Objects can be illuminated at their position or virtual objects can be "touched" with the fingers.
Cool thing is that the cameras recognize any objects such as glasses, money, credit cards, phones, hands - and adjust the projected connections and animations to them!

Delorean back in the future?
The famous stainless steel Delorean, mostly famous because of the Micheal J. Fox movie Back to the Future is about to have a come-back. The company 'Delorean company' from Humble TX is maintaining and restoring these cars, that were mainly great because of their Giugiaro design. Check out this article in Detroit news about the plans to make a new version with the same body, but updated technology.

Making space travel sexy again...
Dava Newman, a professor of aeronautics and astronautics and engineering systems at MIT, has been working together with local design office Trotti and Associates on a new space suit design. The suit relies on materials incorporated in the suit to keep the astronaut pressurized, as opposed to gas pressure on current much heavier suits.

Augmented Art?
If you think augmented reality is just a serious design tool, think again. Why not use it to create something fun, art even?
That's what Pablo Valbueno did, with his Augmented Sculpture project. Like they say in the Gizmodo link, it does have a Tron feel to it.
Take a look here: http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/groovy/augmented-reality-sculpture-makes-you-think-you-are-tron-274773.php>Gizmodo.com

Recycling with a twist
www.relationchip.org
VOGT + WEIZENEGGER, V+W started a project called Relationchip, where clothes with a history get a future... 'At the "RELATIONCHIP-STATION" visitors can exchange one of their garments into a prepared RFID-chip tagged garment from the station. with this act, the visitor automaticly becomes a member of the RELATIONCHIP network, leaving a statement, his portrait and his used garment at the station.'
the clothes people leave are re-designed by cj's, clothes-jockeys(!), gets tagged with the relationchip, and exchanged for the next person's garment...
Genetic jewellery.

Very cool solid woodwork toys, made by Takeji Nakagawa under his own brand take-g toy's.
Besides these cool figurines he also makes the more traditional woodblock toys.
A refreshing take on the usual vinyl desktop toys.

How cool is that?! I can see great opportunities of addressing your goverment in a very direct way. No need to wait for elections or referendi; just write your griefs and desires on their palace walls. Picture this on the White House...
